Its significance is also tied to three surviving nineteenth-century support structures and part of the original farm, which was known locally for sheep raising and later muckland produce farming.","narrative":"Cobblestone walls of varied fieldstones, laid in fine horizontal rows, form this two-story, five-bay farmhouse on Poplar Hill Road near South Lima in the town of Lima. Presumed to date from the early to mid-1830s, it has a gable roof parallel to the road, cut limestone quoins, sills and lintels, brick interior end chimneys, a central entry and a center hall flanked by parlors. These features reflect late Federal and early Greek Revival styles. The house is similar to the Morgan and Markham cobblestone farmhouses, though larger. A carriage barn, a shed and a well with pump from the nineteenth century also survive on the 94.6-acre farm. The Ganoung family occupied the farm from 1853 to 1937. In the nineteenth century it was known for sheep raising, with about 300 sheep sheared in 1865 and 1875, and for butter production. Drained swamplands later produced onions and cabbage. The property is valued for its architecture and its agricultural history.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1830s - ca. 1900","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular with late Federal/early Greek Revival style design features","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Privately owned and used as a residence; condition listed as good; no threats known.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.800462-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/89001120.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001120/f0a36f7d47-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001120/f0a36f7d47-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Lvklock","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ganoung_Cobblestone_House_Lima_NY.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Lvklock</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ganoung_Cobblestone_House_Lima_NY.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313407","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ganoung_Cobblestone_Farmhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5521470"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/livingston-county/ganoung-cobblestone-farmhouse-89001120/"}
