The courthouse was built in 1820-22 by William Claytor; the jail was built about 1820.","why_significant":"The courthouse was Prince William County's fourth and served as the county seat's government center, including through the Civil War. Union occupation from 1862 ended county business, and soldiers took bricks and left the county records to be scattered and largely destroyed. The buildings are also presented as fine examples of early public architecture in a vernacular style with neoclassical influence.","narrative":"Brentsville's courthouse and jail sit side by side on a three-acre parklike lot in Prince William County, Virginia. The two-story brick courthouse was built in 1820-22 by William Claytor and is marked by a fanlight in a keyed brick arch, an octagonal cupola and a molded brick cornice. Its foundation is red sandstone. The two-story jail, about 30 yards east, dates to about 1820 and has two-foot-thick brick walls. Brentsville was the county seat during the Civil War, but government activity stopped when Union occupation began in 1862. In 1863 soldiers stripped bricks from the buildings and left the county records deep on the floors, where many were taken or destroyed. Business resumed after the war, and the county seat moved to Manassas in the 1890s. The buildings later served as a school, a mattress factory, a residence and a community center. The county park authority acquired them in 1974 and restored them in the 1970s. Both are considered locally significant for their history and architecture.","period_of_significance":"1861-1865","architect_builder":"William Claytor - courthouse; ? - jail","architectural_style":"Vernacular, with neoclassical influence","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Both buildings were reported in very good condition. The courthouse and jail were used as Prince William County Park Authority offices, and the setting is parklike.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.564745-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/98/6788/41678898/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/89001060.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001060/f965c606f7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001060/f965c606f7-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Calvin Beale","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Former_Prince_William_County_Courthouse_(Built_1822),_Brentsville_(Prince_William_County,_Virginia).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Calvin Beale</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Former_Prince_William_County_Courthouse_(Built_1822),_Brentsville_(Prince_William_County,_Virginia).jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"90001829","name":"Brentsville Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/brentsville-historic-district-90001829/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678898","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brentsville_Courthouse_and_Jail","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15204576"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/prince-william-county/brentsville-courthouse-and-jail-89001060/"}
