Gayman Store, the town's major general and dry goods store. It is also the best preserved Classical I-House in Canal Winchester, with its original exterior surface unaltered and intact interior details.","narrative":"This brick house at 110 East Waterloo Street in Canal Winchester was built about 1866 for Christian Gayman. It is a two-story Classical I-House, five bays wide and two bays deep, with a slate gable roof, cut stone lintels and a central entry with sidelights and transom. A frame porch added about 1890 runs across the front. The house was built as an addition to an earlier frame and log house, which was later demolished. William P. Miller was the carpenter and John Miller the brickmason. Gayman and his brothers arrived in town in 1843, and he and his brother David bought a dry goods store in 1857, establishing the C. & D. Gayman Store, the town's major general store for decades. Gayman also served as the first town treasurer and on Council. The family kept the house and store into the 20th century. Of eight Classical I-Houses in Canal Winchester, this is the best preserved, with original exterior surfaces and intact interior woodwork, staircase and plan.","period_of_significance":"c. 1866-1922","architect_builder":"Miller, William P. - carpenter; Miller, John - brickmason","architectural_style":"Other: Classical I-House","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-family dwelling, its historic function.
