Waterloo Street in Canal Winchester, Franklin County, Ohio, constructed in 1902 with brickwork by William Boyd.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is the most dominant 20th century commercial building in town, as the only three-story building and one of two of unusual blonde brick. It was also the first building constructed specifically for the local newspaper, The Winchester Times, and served as a communication and social hub, housing a telephone office and a Masonic lodge hall for about 80 years.","narrative":"Built in 1902 at 19 E. Waterloo Street, this three-story, flat-roofed building in Canal Winchester is faced in blonde brick with contrasting lighter quoins, a zigzag corbelled cornice and stone lodge emblems. Brickmason William Boyd laid the walls. Identical details on the north and south elevations give it two faces, one toward Waterloo Street and one toward the former canal. It was built by the Gayman brothers, owners of The Winchester Times, in agreement with the local Masonic lodge. The newspaper printing office occupied the first floor, a telephone office the second, and the lodge hall the third. The paper was printed here until 1976, and the Masons and Eastern Star used the hall for nearly 80 years. It was listed for its vernacular two-part commercial block design and for its role in the community's communication and social life. It is now vacant and boarded up, though the open third-floor lodge hall remains intact.","period_of_significance":"1902 - 1938","architect_builder":"William Boyd, brickmason","architectural_style":"Late 19th & Early 20th Century American Revivals","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Currently vacant and boarded up; third-floor lodge hall largely intact, first floor partitioned with a concrete block wall c. 1985.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:15.042621-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/89001028.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001028/0c3578c55b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001028/0c3578c55b-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Times_Building-Lodge_Hall.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Times_Building-Lodge_Hall.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71985194","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Times_Building-Lodge_Hall","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q65077426"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/franklin-county/times-building-lodge-hall-89001028/"}
