Its plan, exterior and interior details remain largely intact, showing the added detail that prosperous local businesspeople gave to common vernacular house types.","narrative":"Built in 1908 at 113 East Waterloo Street in Canal Winchester, this 2 1/2-story house follows the American Four-Square form, with a box-like mass, a low slate hipped roof, front dormer and a one-story brick porch across the facade. Walls are frame with wire-cut brick veneer on a rock-faced concrete block foundation. Inside, the four-rooms-over-four plan survives, along with oak woodwork, hardwood floors, five-panel doors, leaded beveled glass, a stained glass stair-landing window and a spindled staircase. A frame garage from the early twentieth century stands southwest of the house. John H. Barnhart acquired the lot in 1908 and likely built the house soon afterward; it stayed in his name until 1932, then passed to family members of the Bolenbaugh line. It was listed for architecture because it is the best-preserved of 31 local Four-Square houses, only four of them brick, and shows how successful townspeople added refined detail to a common house type.","period_of_significance":"1908","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"American Four-Square","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-dwelling residence; described as well preserved with an intact plan, exterior and interior details.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.659345-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/89001027.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001027/7d6ec8bcab-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001027/7d6ec8bcab-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Wdzinc","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Barnhardt-Bolenbaugh_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Wdzinc</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Barnhardt-Bolenbaugh_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71985077","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnhardt-Bolenbaugh_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q136346005"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/franklin-county/barnhardt-bolenbaugh-house-89001027/"}
