It now serves as the village municipal building.","why_significant":"The nomination argues significance under Criterion C for architecture, as the only example of Neo-Classical Revival commercial architecture in Canal Winchester, and it is well preserved. Its limestone portico with fluted Doric columns, entablature and pediment is the key stylistic element. It is also a community landmark because of its prominent corner setting.","narrative":"Built in 1924 at the corner of High and Waterloo Streets in Canal Winchester, this brick commercial building was constructed as the headquarters of the Peoples Bank Company. Its diagonal corner entrance is marked by an engaged limestone portico with fluted Doric columns, an entablature with triglyphs and metopes, and a pediment carved with the bank's initials. Pilasters divide the side elevations into bays of tall casement windows. A one-story brick addition was made on the north side in 1940. Inside, the open lobby, marble wainscot, original metal safe and original clock survive. The bank, incorporated in 1903, operated until 1962 before being taken over by another institution, and left this building in 1965. The village then bought it for use as the town hall, and it still serves that purpose. It is recognized as the only Neo-Classical Revival commercial building in the community, well preserved and a local landmark. The design is credited to a Lancaster, Ohio, architect named Van Gundy.","period_of_significance":"1924","architect_builder":"A. J. Van Gundy, Lancaster, Ohio - architect (the narrative also names A.
