It has an L-shaped plan, a slate hipped roof, and an early 20th century precast concrete porch, plus one outbuilding.","why_significant":"The house is significant for architecture as an example of vernacular Italianate domestic building of the Railroad Era, one of four brick Italianate houses within the village limits. It is also significant for its association with Jacob Carty, a prominent merchant and co-founder of the Winchester Mills. The period of significance ends with Carty's death in 1897.","narrative":"Built in 1874 at 48 Elm Street in Canal Winchester, this two-story brick house follows an L-shaped plan and shows Italianate design in its dentiled wood entablature, wide eaves, low hipped slate roof, and tall narrow two-over-two windows. A precast concrete porch added in the early 20th century has gained significance of its own. Inside, a central hall with a turned-spindle staircase, hardwood floors and shaped mouldings survive, and an old frame outbuilding stands on the lot. Jacob Carty, who built it, opened one of the town's earliest stores in 1832, worked in the grain trade, and helped found the Winchester Mills in 1868. After his death in 1897 the property passed to Rudolph Judson Tussing, a greenhouse operator. It is one of four brick Italianate houses within the village limits and represents Railroad Era domestic architecture and a leading local merchant's career.","period_of_significance":"1874-1897","architect_builder":"Jacob Carty","architectural_style":"Italianate; Other: Hipped Ell Plan","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single dwelling. The northwest interior has been altered and a pool added to the grounds, but the original plan remains perceptible.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.486385-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/89001025.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001025/d52ebd2e0d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001025/d52ebd2e0d-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Carty-Tussing_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Carty-Tussing_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71985174","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137807907"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/franklin-county/carty-j-r-j-tussing-house-89001025/"}
