Gordon Avenue in central Pomona, California, built in 1936 on the site of the earlier Garey School, with a brick wall, flagpole and sun dial from the same period.","why_significant":"It is significant locally under Criterion C as a very good example of a Spanish Colonial Revival school, and the only such school building remaining in Pomona. It was designed by Pasadena architect Sylvanus Marston, a leading practitioner of the style. It retains more original character and integrity than any other building in the school district.","narrative":"Abraham Lincoln Elementary School, at 1200 N. Gordon Avenue in central Pomona, was built in 1936 on the site of the earlier Garey School. Bricks from the old school were reused in the schoolyard wall along the south and east edges of the grounds. The single-story building follows a modified cruciform plan, with ten classrooms, a kindergarten, an auditorium, offices and a cafeteria. Its orientation allows natural ventilation, and air conditioning has never been needed. Designed by Pasadena architect Sylvanus Marston in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, it has a tile roof, stucco walls, a bell tower, arched auditorium windows and low-relief Doric details at the entry. It is the only Spanish Colonial Revival school remaining in Pomona and is still used as a school. Original maple floors, woodwork, light fixtures and telephones survive. Its quality of design and unusually intact condition made it locally significant for architecture.","period_of_significance":"1936","architect_builder":"Marston, Sylvanus B.","architectural_style":"Late 19th-20th Century Revivals: Spanish Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as an elementary school; the oldest school facility in the district still used as a school. Six portable classroom buildings added between 1956 and 1987 are non-contributing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.573561-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/89000935.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123859264","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":null},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/los-angeles-county/lincoln-abraham-elementary-school-89000935/"}
