It also illustrates how town centers gave way to commercial and institutional uses while residential neighborhoods grew around them.","narrative":"Built around 1840, this 1½-story clapboard house at 5 Myrtle Street in Winchester is a well-preserved example of Gothic Revival design. It has a steeply pitched gable roof with cross gables, elaborate scroll-sawn vergeboards, acorn-shaped drops, grooved cornerboards, label moldings over the windows and some pointed or lancet openings. The side-hall plan and one-story wing are typical of small houses of the period, and most windows keep their original 6/6 sash. The only notable change is a Queen Anne style porch, probably added when the house was moved. The house originally stood on a triangle of land near Washington, Main and Mt. Vernon Streets, where it was owned by Oliver W. Gardner and paired with a twin owned by Alexis Cutting. When the town chose the site for a new Town Hall in 1887, the Gardner House was moved to Myrtle Street, then a fast-developing residential area. Its move reflects the pattern of town centers turning commercial and institutional while homes ringed them. The twin house was demolished in 1968.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition described as excellent; present use is a dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.77646-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/50/7908/63790850/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000791.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000791/fc83dc9501-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000791/fc83dc9501-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WinchesterMA_OWGardnerHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WinchesterMA_OWGardnerHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790850","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O._W._Gardner_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7072182"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/gardner-o-w-house-89000791/"}
