It is clapboard-sided with no outbuildings.","why_significant":"The nomination presents it as a good local example of balloon framing, which came into increasing use in Wakefield after 1850, and says it keeps much of its original Italianate detailing. It is also tied to the Hopkins family, early settlers whose farm lay in the northwestern part of town. It meets Criterion C at the local level.","narrative":"Built in the 1850s on a high lot in the northwestern part of Wakefield, this 2½-story Italianate house replaced the original Hopkins family homestead. The Hopkins family were early settlers, and their farm stayed in the family and was worked into the 1920s. Open farmland surrounded the house as late as 1906, and the land was sold and developed in the 1940s and 1950s, making it one of the later developments on the town's west side. Architecturally, the house shows how Italianate buildings grew larger than Greek Revival ones once balloon framing replaced mortise-and-tenon construction. It has a gabled roof with a cross-gabled dormer, corner pilasters beneath a wide frieze, a high granite foundation, and paired brackets at the eaves and bays. Eastlake incised designs and a shingled gable that anticipates the Queen Anne style add variety. A Colonial Revival portico was added around the 1880s. The house was listed for its local architectural significance.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Recorded in fair condition and in use as a dwelling, with a Colonial Revival portico added c. 1880s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.808464-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/30/7910/63791030/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000732.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000732/3b16085feb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000732/3b16085feb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WakefieldMA_42HopkinsStreet.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WakefieldMA_42HopkinsStreet.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791030","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_42_Hopkins_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5914316"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/house-at-42-hopkins-street-89000732/"}
