It was probably built during the speculative development of Converse Street in the 1880s and may be an example of the Wakefield Building and Real Estate Association's work. It meets Criterion C at the local level.","narrative":"Built around 1880, this house at 39 Converse Street in Wakefield, Massachusetts, is a Queen Anne style dwelling that sits on a raised lot behind an embankment and faces south. It rises 2½ stories under a hipped roof with a transverse gable. Its roof peak has an unusual arrangement, with a louvered opening and a shed-roof dormer holding a sunburst fanlight. Patterned shingle bands, a rope-molding stringcourse, fish-scale shingles and brackets at the garrison overhang decorate the exterior, and a shell mosaic on the east frieze appears on at least one other Wakefield house. The design departs from the conventions of its day and seems to be the work of an inventive designer-builder. Converse Street was laid out by 1875, and the area developed quickly as the population grew. The Wakefield Building and Real Estate Association bought much of the farmland, laid out lots, financed houses and supplied plans, and this house may be one of its products. It retains its original character and was recognized for its architecture.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition listed as fair; present use is a dwelling, with no major alterations recorded.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:02.191018-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/72/7911/63791172/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000718.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000718/33bd32f30c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000718/33bd32f30c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WakefieldMA_39ConverseStreet.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WakefieldMA_39ConverseStreet.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791172","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_39_Converse_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5914295"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/house-at-39-converse-street-89000718/"}
