It sits on a half-acre hilltop lot facing east.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it a very high style example of Queen Anne architecture with design features unique in Wakefield, and notes it is very well preserved. It also reflects the development of the Wakefield Park area by physician and pharmacist Dr. Charles Jordan. It is argued to meet Criterion C at the local level.","narrative":"This Queen Anne house at 9 Jordan Avenue in Wakefield was built around 1885 on a hilltop lot facing east. It rises two and a half stories beneath a hipped roof, an uncommon choice in a town where gable roofs were the norm. Transverse gables, a northwest corner tower and an oriel in the east gable add complexity to the plan. Porches on the east and south sides rest on Italianate pillars with panelled brackets, and the walls are enlivened by decorative shingle work, panelling and a stringcourse. Dr. Charles Jordan, a physician who retired to open and run a pharmacy, bought farm land on the west side of town in the 1880s as Wakefield Park began to develop. He built the house on the southern edge of his land, on a street then called Mt. Pleasant Avenue. His son later headed the Wakefield Jordan Furniture Company, a wicker manufacturer. The house is valued as a well-preserved, locally unique example of high style Queen Anne design.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition is listed as fair, with no major alterations; present use is dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:02.234566-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/70/7911/63791170/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000716.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000716/a427b673a0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000716/a427b673a0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WakefieldMA_DrCharlesJordanHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WakefieldMA_DrCharlesJordanHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791170","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Charles_Jordan_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5304022"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/jordan-dr-charles-house-89000716/"}
