It was probably built as part of a late 19th century suburban development for Boston commuters. It is considered significant at the local level under Criteria A and C.","narrative":"Built around 1889-1890, this 2 1/2 story Queen Anne house at 54 Spring Street sits on a sloping lot in the Greenwood section of Wakefield, Massachusetts. Its gable end faces the street, with intersecting side gables forming bays, a pattern common among Wakefield houses of the period. A one-story porch wraps the north and part of the west facade. The most notable feature is the decorative shingle work filling the gables and the porch pediment, along with shingled shed-roof hoods over second-floor windows, ornamental bosses on the lintels and decorated barge boards. The house is thought to be part of a late nineteenth century suburban development for commuters to Boston. Greenwood was farmland until the later 1800s, when streetcar access made it attractive to suburban settlers. The house retains its original design, materials and setting, and was recognized for its architecture and its link to that suburban growth.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Recorded in fair condition and used as a dwelling, with a noncontributing garage (c.1920); no major alterations listed.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:02.225907-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/25/7918/63791825/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000703.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000703/48e66d0b03-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000703/48e66d0b03-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WakefieldMA_54SpringStreet.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WakefieldMA_54SpringStreet.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791825","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_54_Spring_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5914407"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/house-at-54-spring-street-89000703/"}
