It has shingle and clapboard walls and sits on a hill.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the church is a well-preserved example of popular 1880s stylistic elements, mixing Stick, Shingle and Queen Anne features despite alterations. It also reflects the growth of the remote Greenwood community and its wish for a non-denominational church. It meets Criterion C at the local level.","narrative":"Greenwood Union Church is a small hillside church at Main and Oak streets in Wakefield, Massachusetts. Begun in 1883 on land from the Joseph Eaton estate, it was built as a community chapel with a hall as an integral part of the plan. Its upper portions were not finished until 1894-95, when it was dedicated for a Christian church open to all. It took the name Greenwood Union Church in 1903 after a survey of residents' preferred denominations. The 1 1/2-story building combines Stick, Shingle and Queen Anne elements, including banded windows, a turreted tower, fancy shingling, decorated bargeboards, heavy doors with forged hinges and a high fieldstone foundation. Remodeling in the early twentieth century added a clock and entry porch, and a later addition followed. Despite these changes, it keeps its integrity of location, setting, materials and workmanship, and was listed as a local example of 1880s design.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne (eclectic mix of Stick, Shingle and Queen Anne)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is church; condition described as fair.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.005313-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/68/7911/63791168/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000697.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000697/cba1c5d3b4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000697/cba1c5d3b4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WakefieldMA_GreenwoodUnionChurch.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WakefieldMA_GreenwoodUnionChurch.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791168","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenwood_Union_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5605099"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/greenwood-union-church-89000697/"}
