It represents the town's 19th-century cottage industry of shoemaking. It was nominated under criteria A and C at the local level.","narrative":"This small house at 113 Salem Street in Wakefield began as a shoe shop, built between about 1840 and 1857. It is a 1½-story clapboard building with a high peaked gable roof whose ridge runs parallel to the street. Three bays are squeezed into the narrow front, with the door in the first bay. A one-story ell sits on very high brick foundations, and a basement door suggests the lower level was used for storage. Later additions and conversion to a residence left its original simplicity largely intact. The shop belonged to David Nichols, a shoemaker who lived at 103 Salem Street according to an 1857 map. Before the McKay sewing machine reached Wakefield in 1862, many residents made shoes in yard shops like this one, with family members dividing the work. Manufacturers marketed the finished shoes in Boston. The building is valued as a local example of that cottage industry and building form.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th century vernacular","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a dwelling; condition listed as fair.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.48452-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/93/7921/63792193/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000688.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000688/e00e129449-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000688/e00e129449-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WakefieldMA_113SalemStreet.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WakefieldMA_113SalemStreet.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792193","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_113_Salem_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5913879"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/house-at-113-salem-street-89000688/"}
