It represents the fashionable middle-class character of Lawrence Street in the late 19th century. It retains integrity of location, setting, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association.","narrative":"Built between 1896 and 1899, this house at 23 Lawrence Street in Wakefield, Massachusetts, is a Colonial Revival dwelling on a corner lot in a suburban neighborhood. It has a 2½-story rectangular massing under a gable roof, relieved by a curved two-story round corner bay, a front porch with paired colonettes, and an exterior brick chimney. A Palladian window fills the gable field, and a carved swag decorates a window spandrel. The house appears to replace an earlier one on the lot, once linked to John Vinton. Lawrence Street was laid out by the Emerson family in the 1850s, a family prominent in local shoe manufacturing, and was developed further in the 1870s with S. O. Richardson. By the 1870s and 1880s it had become a fashionable middle-class neighborhood. The house was listed as a well-preserved, high-style local example of Colonial Revival domestic architecture, with a garage and barn also on the property.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is a dwelling; condition is described as fair, with no major alterations. A garage and barn (c. 1899) are listed as contributing outbuildings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.420117-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/55/7906/63790655/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000681.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000681/80d0f516b5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000681/80d0f516b5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_at_23_Lawrence_Street,_Wakefield_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_at_23_Lawrence_Street,_Wakefield_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790655","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_23_Lawrence_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715576"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/house-at-23-lawrence-street-89000681/"}
