It retains integrity of location, setting, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It also reflects the middle-class, shoemaking-related development of the Aborn Street area.","narrative":"Set on a rise behind a fieldstone retaining wall on one acre, this rambling Queen Anne house in Wakefield was built around 1883-88. It runs along the crest of a small hill and has two main parts: a cross-gabled two-and-a-half-story section entered through an extended porte-cochere, and a two-story gabled section joined to it by a high porch. Porches, oriels, bays, overhanging upper stories, ornamented bargeboards, flower and thistle gable ornaments, brackets and an exterior chimney give it a complex, lively composition. A double carriage barn of about 1888, with servants' apartments above, repeats the house's themes. It was listed as probably the largest and grandest Queen Anne house in its neighborhood. Aborn Street was named for shoe manufacturer John G. Aborn and opened by the heirs of his father-in-law, John White. The surrounding streets became home to middle-class businessmen and craftsmen, many working in shoemaking, and some commuting to Boston by train.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition is stated as good; present use is dwelling and barn; no major alterations; not moved.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.968783-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/62/7911/63791162/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000676.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000676/f068044477-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000676/f068044477-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WakefieldMA_20AbornStreet.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WakefieldMA_20AbornStreet.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791162","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_18A_and_20_Aborn_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5914011"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/house-at-18a-and-20-aborn-street-89000676/"}
