It is a two and one half story clapboard residence on a lot of less than one acre.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a well preserved and very good example of late 18th century Federal domestic design. It represents early settlement of the northern rural section of town and was the 19th century home of Capt. Aaron Foster, a Selectman, School Committeeman and state Representative. The surrounding post-World War II subdivision reflects the sale of large farms for smaller houses.","narrative":"Built about 1789, this two and one half story clapboard house at 1 Woodcrest Drive in Wakefield is a well preserved example of late Federal domestic architecture. Its five bay facade sits under a high gable roof with short returns and a boxed cornice. The central door has a surround of simple pilasters supporting a low entablature, with three-quarter length sidelights. Two internal chimneys suggest construction late in the Federal period, and the interior holds eight working fireplaces and two brick ovens. Corncobs were found in the walls, used as insulation. In the 19th century the house was the home of Capt. Aaron Foster, born in Danvers in 1803 and died in Wakefield in 1896, who served as Selectman, School Committeeman and Representative to the General Court. The house represents early settlement of Wakefield's northern rural section, now surrounded by a post-World War II subdivision built on farmland sold off by owners who could no longer keep large acreage.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition is described as good, and the house is in residential use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:12:59.757786-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/26/7916/63791626/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000673.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000673/6d33931e03-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000673/6d33931e03-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WakefieldMA_1WoodcrestDrive.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WakefieldMA_1WoodcrestDrive.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791626","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_1_Woodcrest_Drive","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715572"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/house-at-1-woodcrest-drive-89000673/"}
