Its houses date from 1843 to 1910.","why_significant":"The district is a cohesive cluster of suburban houses that are fine examples of the architectural styles most common in Winchester between 1843 and 1910. It also contains a small subdivision developed by William Firth, which helped spark extensive residential building on Winchester's west side in the early twentieth century. It meets Criterion C.","narrative":"Southwest of Wedge Pond in Winchester, Massachusetts, this district of 45 main buildings shows how a neighborhood of modest lots grew from the 1840s to about 1910. The oldest house is the Symmes Tenant House of 1843, a Greek Revival dwelling with a Doric portico. Mid-century picturesque houses include the Bellows House and the Carpenter Gothic Charles Curtis House. Later examples range from Stick Style and Queen Anne to the Shingle and Colonial Revival Stephen Langley House of 1892. In the 1890s developer William Firth assembled land, laid out Glengarry Road and Grassmere Road, and subdivided it into modest house lots. Architect Robert Coit designed houses there for Boston-area businessmen and professionals, who could commute by rail. Firth rented the houses at first and had sold most by 1908. The district was recognized for its cohesive scale, setback and residential use, its range of period styles, and as an example of a garden suburb near Boston.","period_of_significance":"1843-1910","architect_builder":"Robert Coit (architect for William Firth's development houses); Gardner Symmes (builder of the Symmes Tenant House)","architectural_style":"Greek Revival, Gothic Revival/Carpenter Gothic, Stick Style, Queen Anne, Shingle, Colonial Revival and Medieval Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; general condition is described as excellent. 40 of 45 main buildings are contributing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.417044-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/40/7909/63790940/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000662.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000662/19ce032f95-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000662/19ce032f95-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WinchesterMA_FirthGlengarryHD_GrassmereStreet.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WinchesterMA_FirthGlengarryHD_GrassmereStreet.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790940","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firth%E2%80%93Glengarry_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5454296"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/firth-glengarry-historic-district-89000662/"}
