Its slate hip roof, Flemish bond brickwork and pedimented central pavilion reflect the quality of the lost estate. It is listed under criterion C.","narrative":"Built in 1900 at 22 Ginn Road in Winchester, this two-story brick house served as the gardener's residence on the estate of Edwin Ginn, a wealthy textbook publisher and founder of Ginn & Company. The estate, called Terrace of Oaks, was Winchester's most ambitious Georgian Revival property. Its main house and other buildings, including a music hall with a marble and walnut-paneled auditorium, were demolished in 1946. Only the gardener's house and the nearby carriage house survive. The building shows the estate's quality in its slate hip roof, brick laid in Flemish bond, and marble water table, lintels and sills. A symmetrical five-bay facade centers on a pedimented pavilion framed by pilasters, with a Tuscan entry porch and a large arched window above. Smaller second-story windows imitate high-style Georgian and Federal houses. It remains a dwelling in excellent condition with no major alterations, and it is valued as an architectural remnant of the lost estate.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Georgian Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition described as excellent; present use is dwelling, with no major alterations and not moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.881651-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/3/7908/63790803/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000654.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000654/23a4db3eaa-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000654/23a4db3eaa-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WinchesterMA_GinnGardenersHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WinchesterMA_GinnGardenersHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790803","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ginn_Gardener%27s_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5563163"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/ginn-gardeners-house-89000654/"}
