The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The house is considered a well-detailed example of the Shingle style with strong Colonial Revival elements. Its size and elaboration reflect the growing wealth of Winchester's suburban population. It is also associated with Edward L. Braddock, an inventor who held over 100 patents for tinning and galvanizing processes.","narrative":"Set on a hilltop parcel on Highland Avenue beside the Middlesex Fells Reservation, this 2½-story house was built in 1893 as one of several elaborate homes in a residential area developed by L. Wyman, who lived next door. It was first called Hillcrest. The house is covered entirely in shingles under an overhanging gable roof. Its symmetrical facade has polygonal bays capped by cross gables with diamond-pane windows, and a conical dormer tops the central bay. A verandah with paired Tuscan columns and shingled segmental arches wraps around to a gabled porte-cochere. John B. Humphrey was the first owner. In 1898 he sold the property to Edward L. Braddock, an inventor with more than 100 patents for tinning and galvanizing processes, whose family lived there until 1915. The house is valued as a detailed Shingle style design with Colonial Revival character and as evidence of Winchester's growth as an affluent suburb. It remains a dwelling in excellent condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Shingle style/Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition; present use is a dwelling; a garage is a noncontributing outbuilding.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.760689-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/7/7919/63791907/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000651.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000651/cbfdd3c684-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000651/cbfdd3c684-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WinchesterMA_EdwardBraddockHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WinchesterMA_EdwardBraddockHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791907","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Braddock_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5341990"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/braddock-edward-house-89000651/"}
