Simonds on land owned by Harrison Parker.","why_significant":"The house is a fine academic example of the Mansard style, with a symmetrical three-bay facade, a bell-cast mansard roof of patterned slate, elaborate paired brackets and lavish wooden ornamentation. It also reflects the continuing development of southern Main Street as a fashionable 19th-century residential area.","narrative":"Built in 1877 by William and Mary R. Simonds, this two-story wood-frame house at 420 Main Street in Winchester is a well-preserved example of the Mansard style. A bell-cast mansard roof of patterned slate crowns a symmetrical three-bay facade. Polygonal bays flank a glazed double-leaf entry and are linked by a one-story porch. Pedimented windows, matching dormers, corner pilasters and elaborate paired brackets under the overhanging eaves add to the ornamentation. Vinyl siding was applied around 1980 without removing the wooden trim. The house also shows how southern Main Street developed as a fashionable residential area in the 19th century. It stayed in the Simonds family for generations. After Mary Simonds died in 1915, it passed to her daughter Cora Simonds Morgan, who had earlier run a millinery shop there, and her husband, who lived in it until 1954. The house remains a dwelling in excellent condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mansard","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition described as excellent; still used as a dwelling. The only alteration is vinyl siding added around 1980 without removing the wooden trim.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:02.314465-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/99/7917/63791799/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000640.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000640/7e9d82a8f4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000640/7e9d82a8f4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WinchesterMA_WilliamSimondsHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WinchesterMA_WilliamSimondsHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791799","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Simonds_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8018452"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/simonds-william-house-89000640/"}
