It is described as the best-preserved of the surviving worker's cottages of its period. It was recommended under Criteria A and C.","narrative":"Built around 1875, this small worker's cottage at 9 Kendall Street in Winchester reflects the housing that grew up around the town center as local industry and commerce expanded. The house is one and one-half stories, three bays wide and one bay deep, with a gable roof running parallel to the street, short gable returns, a center entrance under a divided-light transom, and two-over-two windows. A one-story shed-roofed ell sits at the rear. It has no ornamentation, which is typical of modest workers' housing. Kendall Street first appears on an 1854 map, and immigrant laborers often settled near their church, here Saint Mary's Catholic Church. The house was one of five dwellings owned by Edward Sullivan, a local stone mason, and passed to his three children by 1893. It was listed because it is considered the best-preserved and least altered of the town's surviving worker's cottages, and it remains a dwelling in very good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition is described as very good, with no major alterations; it is still used as a dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.891599-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/29/7922/63792229/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000636.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000636/421fe5fb0c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000636/421fe5fb0c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WinchesterMA_EdwardSullivanHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WinchesterMA_EdwardSullivanHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792229","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Sullivan_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5345502"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/sullivan-edward-house-89000636/"}
