Mason, one of the first Boston businessmen to settle in Winchester during the early suburbanization of the town. It meets criteria A and C.","narrative":"Set on a landscaped hillside east of Winchester's town center, this two-and-one-half story house at 8-10 Hillside Avenue was built in the early 1860s, possibly as a speculative venture. It is a high-style Italianate dwelling on a T-plan, with a truncated hip roof of grey slate, polygonal bays, porches on three elevations, and broad eaves carried on scroll brackets with pendant drops. An elaborate open porch with paired chamfered columns shelters the offset entrance. The house was sold at auction to John C. Mason before 1875. Mason was among the earliest prosperous Boston businessmen to settle in Winchester in the third quarter of the nineteenth century. He served as a selectman and water commissioner and helped found the Crawford Memorial Methodist Church. In 1893 he sold part of his grounds as house lots on Hillside Avenue and the newly laid out Crescent Avenue. The house is recognized for its architecture and for its link to the town's early suburban growth.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is a dwelling; condition is listed as excellent with no major alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.89339-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/67/7917/63791767/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000634.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000634/620942cc62-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000634/620942cc62-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WinchesterMA_JohnMasonHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WinchesterMA_JohnMasonHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791767","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Mason_House_(Winchester,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6247084"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/mason-john-house-89000634/"}
