It is also tied to the Locke family, a prominent local family with extensive landholdings around the house from at least 1699.","narrative":"Standing at 68 High Street in Winchester, this two-and-one-half story farmhouse was built around 1855 in the Italianate style. It has a gabled roof, an entrance offset to the left, and a three-bay facade with full-length six-over-six windows on the lower story. Bracketed sills, canted-corner surrounds, and a two-sided open porch with chamfered posts add detail, and a gabled bay with a lunette window faces east. A low granite retaining wall borders the lot. The house was built by Asa Locke, a prosperous farmer who sold produce in the Boston and Charlestown markets. The Lockes descended from James Locke, who was farming nearby by 1699, and the family held extensive land in the area into the 1930s. Asa's son Elbridge inherited the house in 1857, and it left family ownership in 1902 when Handel Pond, a partner in the Ivers & Pond Piano Company, bought it. It is valued as a well-preserved sidehall Italianate farmhouse and for its Locke family connections.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Built by Asa Locke; architect unknown","architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent; present use is a dwelling, as was the original use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:12:59.716293-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/30/7913/63791330/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000631.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000631/1608587388-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000631/1608587388-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WinchesterMA_AsaLockeHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WinchesterMA_AsaLockeHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791330","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asa_Locke_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4803135"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/locke-asa-house-89000631/"}
