Gardner Symmes, a well-known local builder of the mid-nineteenth century, built it and owned it from 1854 to 1864. By 1865 it belonged to Alfred C. Vinton, a Winchester lawyer, financial backer of the newly organized Winchester Hospital, and author of the Symmes Memorial. In 1892 Vinton partnered with neighbor Sarah Lunt to lay out and sell houselots on Fairview Terrace. The Vinton family kept the house until the 1920s. Its features include scroll brackets with pendant drops under the eaves, a center entrance with a molded surround and leaded-glass half-sidelights, bracketed window hoods, and a facade scored and flushboarded to imitate ashlar masonry. It was listed as a conservative mid-century Italianate residence and an example of early suburban homes of Boston businessmen.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Gardner Symmes","architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is dwelling; condition is excellent with no major alterations; a two-bay detached garage stands on the lot.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.176432-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/75/7917/63791775/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000629.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000629/5861328154-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000629/5861328154-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WinchesterMA_AlfredVintonHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WinchesterMA_AlfredVintonHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791775","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Vinton_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4723560"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/vinton-alfred-house-89000629/"}
