Architect unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a well detailed and preserved example of the Gothic Revival style, notable for vergeboards carved in an unusual acorn shape. It illustrates the range of forms and decorative motifs carpenter builders gave this uncommon style in Winchester, which retains an unusually large collection of mid-19th-century Gothic Revival cottages. It is listed under criterion C.","narrative":"Built in the 1850s, before 1854, this 1 1/2 story clapboard house at 14 Stevens Street in Winchester is a small Gothic Revival dwelling with a steeply pitched gable roof. Its L-plan, more often associated with the Italianate style, features a forward projecting wing, a one story porch across the rest of the facade, and a two story polygonal bay on the side. The front and side gables carry finials and vergeboards carved to resemble acorns, an unusual motif. Charles Pressey, who arrived in Winchester in the 1840s and shared in its founding in 1850, constructed the house. By 1870 it belonged to George H. Eustis, a bookkeeper at the Winchester Cooperative Bank who served as town treasurer from 1910 to 1924 and kept the house until 1940. The house is valued as a well preserved example of a style that Winchester carpenter builders interpreted in varied ways, and it forms a visual counterpart to its neighbor at 8 Stevens Street.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; built by Charles Pressey","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition described as excellent; present use is a dwelling, as originally.
