It is also notable for its unusual Gothic Revival detailing, which shows that this rare style was used for farmsteads as well as suburban cottages. The nomination applies criterion C.","narrative":"Located at 257 Forest Street in a rural, residential corner of northeastern Winchester, this house and its attached shed and barn form a New England connected farmstead. The Dike family built it around 1850 near the Stoneham town line, which was not settled until 1864. Joshua Orne, a shoe cutter working in Stoneham, bought the property in 1865. Later owners included Abbey Warren, a mason, from 1889 to 1912, and then Myron and Mary Warren for about thirty years. The two-story, wood-frame main house turns its gable end to the street and has a narrow two-bay center section flanked by side-gable wings. Original vergeboards and an oriel window survive, though the east wing was enclosed by an early twentieth-century sunporch. It is valued as the best preserved farmstead in eastern Winchester and as an unusual example of Gothic Revival detailing applied to farm buildings. It also shows tradesmen continuing to farm to supplement their incomes.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Built by the Dike family; architect unknown","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is a dwelling; condition is listed as good.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.538271-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/44/7908/63790844/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000621.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000621/ea908b58c4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000621/ea908b58c4-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown authorUnknown author","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DikeOrneHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown authorUnknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DikeOrneHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790844","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dike-Orne_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5276508"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/dike-orne-house-89000621/"}
