Architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The form cites associations with James Russell, who was active in Winchester affairs in the late nineteenth century, and the house's value as an important local example of Greek Revival architecture. It meets Criteria B and C. The site also carries earlier history tied to the Belknap family, a tavern and a mill.","narrative":"Built in 1841 by Charles Russell, this house at 993 Main Street in Winchester is a two-and-one-half story Greek Revival dwelling with a rectangular plan and rear ell. Its five-bay facade is symmetrical, with a center entrance framed by transom and sidelights beneath a one-story Ionic porch with fluted columns. Wide corner pilasters, a wide entablature and a moderate-pitch gable roof are other typical Greek Revival features. The exterior has been covered in asbestos shingles, though clapboards remain visible at the rear. The house replaced the earlier Thomas Belknap House, which at times served as a tavern and briefly held the Woburn grammar school in 1728. Nearby, the Belknap family operated one of Winchester's three oldest mill privileges. After Russell died in 1851, his widow Elizabeth and son James inherited the house. James served on the School Committee, as an Assessor and as a Selectman from 1887 to 1892. The house was listed for this association and its architecture.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Charles Russell (builder); architect unknown","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Condition listed as good; present use is a dwelling, as is the original use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.214877-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/22/7917/63791722/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000617.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000617/82119f047a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000617/82119f047a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WinchesterMA_CharlesRussellHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WinchesterMA_CharlesRussellHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791722","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Russell_House_(Winchester,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5082225"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/russell-charles-house-89000617/"}
