It includes a 1926 stone Neo-Gothic church, a school, a rectory and a convent, the last three built around 1909-1910.","why_significant":"The district is tied to the growth of Southbridge's French Canadian community in the early 20th century, when a new parish was created to serve the Franco-American population near the American Optical Company works. The stone Neo-Gothic church reflects the community's importance, and the plainer school and residences resemble other Roman Catholic complexes in the region. It is considered significant at the local level and to retain its integrity.","narrative":"Sacred Heart Church Historic District is a group of four parish buildings on tree-shaded grounds in an urban three-decker neighborhood of Southbridge, close to the American Optical Company. The dominant building is the 1926 stone Neo-Gothic church on Charlton Street, with twin facade towers, buttresses, tall Gothic windows and slim spires. Nearby stand the brick rectory and convent of about 1909 and a large brick school facing Mechanic Street, all in a restrained Classical or Colonial Revival manner. The parish was founded in 1908 because the original French Canadian parish, Notre Dame, could no longer hold the growing Franco-American population. Its boundaries took in the area known as The Flats. A $70,000 gift from Notre Dame supported the start, and the school opened in 1910 under the Sisters of the Assumption of Nicolet. Services were held in the school until the church was completed. By 1919 the parish served about 600 families, and the school had 400 students.","period_of_significance":"1908-1926","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Neo-Gothic (church); Colonial Revival / Classical Revival (school, rectory, convent)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is religious; condition is described as good, with well-cared-for grounds.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:12:59.936654-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/37/7935/63793537/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000598.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000598/7243f2ce80-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000598/7243f2ce80-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sacred_Heart_Church,_Southbridge_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sacred_Heart_Church,_Southbridge_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793537","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacred_Heart_Church_Historic_District_(Southbridge,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7397170"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/sacred-heart-church-historic-district-89000598/"}
