The architect is not known.","why_significant":"The church is tied to the late 19th-century growth of Southbridge's commercial and institutional center. It is the only truly Victorian Gothic church in the town, with a complex High Victorian Gothic design. Together with neighboring buildings it forms part of the architectural setting of the town's civic center.","narrative":"Built in 1885 at 61 Elm Street, this brick church in Southbridge, Massachusetts, replaced an 1822 meeting house that stood on the same site. A storm in 1884 sent the old steeple through the roof, and the congregation chose to build anew; the new church cost $17,500 with furnishings and was dedicated on September 4, 1885. The Congregationalists had been the first group to break away from the interdenominational meeting house after the town's incorporation in 1816. The design is Victorian Gothic, with an irregular silhouette, high pitched roofs, pinnacles, ornamental brickwork and tall stained glass windows. Its main entrance is unusually placed in the transept rather than on the street-facing facade. The tall slim steeple was destroyed in the 1938 hurricane and never rebuilt, and a one-story rear addition was made in the mid-20th century. It is the town's only truly Victorian Gothic church, and it sits beside the Town Hall and the Samuel Hartwell House in the civic heart of the community.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Victorian Gothic (High Victorian Gothic)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent; still in use as a church.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.716687-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/85/7935/63793585/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000591.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000591/e6fa99fdb8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000591/e6fa99fdb8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Congregational_Church,_Southbridge_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Congregational_Church,_Southbridge_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793585","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congregational_Church_(Southbridge,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5160718"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/congregational-church-89000591/"}
