It has a two-story quadristyle porch and a pediment on the facade.","why_significant":"The nomination ties the house to the developing mill economy through its builder, Bella Tiffany, an early partner of Samuel Slater, and later its owner Manning Leonard. It is also significant for its gable-front orientation, Greek Revival ornament, and use of brick. It is described as one of the most imposing 19th-century residences in Southbridge.","narrative":"Built around 1832 at 25 Elm Street in Southbridge, this brick temple-front house features a two-story quadristyle porch and a pedimented facade. Its reeded Doric columns are slim and its entablature and cornice lighter than typical Greek Revival work, reflecting lingering Federal influence. Brick was more common in Southbridge for Federal-period houses than for later ones. Bella Tiffany (1786-1851) had it built after retiring from the cotton commission business. He had been Samuel Slater's original partner in the first cotton mill in Webster, and in Southbridge he helped found the bank and served in the state Legislature. The Leonard family owned the house much longer; Manning Leonard held it in 1855 and his heirs still owned it in 1898. Leonard was a local businessman, mill owner and justice of the peace. Today the house is in excellent condition and is used as offices, with a modern rear wing added.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition rated excellent; currently used as offices (originally residential); a modern rear wing was added in the mid-to-late 20th century.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:12:59.920222-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/97/7934/63793497/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000590.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000590/8ea7e434dc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000590/8ea7e434dc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tiffany-Leonard_House,_Southbridge_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tiffany-Leonard_House,_Southbridge_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793497","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiffany-Leonard_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7801182"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/tiffany-leonard-house-89000590/"}
