It is one of few of its type that still has its original siding. It reflects the growth of the town's eastern section after the American Optical factory opened in 1872.","narrative":"This one-and-a-half story cottage at 3 Dean Street in Southbridge was built between about 1878 and 1889 as worker housing. It is a vernacular version of the Stick Style, with half timbering and dog tooth shingling on the gable end, a high-pitched roof, dog tooth brackets under the overhanging eaves, and an entrance on the long side. Houses of this design once lined Crystal and Lens Streets in rows, near the American Optical Company factory that opened in 1872. Many were later altered, enlarged or replaced, and most survivors now have synthetic siding. This house keeps its original clapboard and shingle siding. It was moved a short distance from the corner of Crystal and Dean Streets between 1899 and 1904, when a larger building replaced it there, and the present porch was probably added then. A garage was added in the 1950s. It is described as the best preserved and a rare survivor of its type.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Stick (vernacular expression of the Stick Style)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition rated good-fair; in use as a residence.
