It was among the first workers' houses near the American Optical Company factory, which opened in 1872. It is also a vernacular expression of the Greek Revival style with Italianate porch detailing.","narrative":"Number 34 Benefit Street in Southbridge is a narrow, one-and-a-half story clapboard cottage built between about 1870 and 1878. It is the best preserved of nine nearly identical workers' cottages on the west side of the street, all developed by William Edwards. They were among the first workers' houses built near the American Optical Company factory on Mechanics Street, which opened in 1872. In 1878 most of the land between Crystal and Foster Streets was still undeveloped, and the area around North Street later filled with dense housing tied to the company's prosperity. The cottage sits gable end to the street, with its entrance under a side porch that has brackets and jigsaw-cut ornament. Its gable cornice with returns, narrow frieze and wide plain window frames reflect a simplified Greek Revival form, while the porch is Italianate in flavor. Changes include a late-19th-century dormer and late-20th-century stone facing on the foundation. The house is still residential.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; row developed by William Edwards","architectural_style":"Greek Revival Vernacular","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use residential; condition good; not moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.923567-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/79/7934/63793479/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000585.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000585/ce5d4ef975-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000585/ce5d4ef975-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SouthbridgeMA_34_BenefitStreet.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SouthbridgeMA_34_BenefitStreet.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793479","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_34_Benefit_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715580"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/house-at-34-benefit-street-89000585/"}
