It is also significant for its unusual Byzantine/Classical design, and it is the oldest Orthodox church building in the town. It is rated significant at the local level under criteria A and C.","narrative":"Built in 1932 at 55 North Street in Southbridge, Massachusetts, St. George's Greek Orthodox Church serves as the center of the town's Greek community and is the oldest Orthodox church building in Southbridge. The brick building follows a central plan meant to recall Byzantine-influenced churches in Greece. It uses light buff brick, low pitched roofs, close eaves, and Roman arched windows, doors and belfry cupolas. The main facade has a Greek temple front with Corinthian columns and a full Classical entablature with pediment, which appears intended as a symbol of the Greek community. Greek men first arrived in Southbridge about 1905 to work at American Optical, and families followed from about 1908. By 1910 the population could support a church. That first church later burned, and the congregation bought the North Street land from the Hamilton Woolen Company and built the present church. The company is said to have donated its bell, cast in Troy, New York, about 1860.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Byzantine influences (Byzantine/Classical design)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition is listed as excellent, with no major alterations, no outbuildings, and the building not moved.
