It reflects the settlement period and the lasting agricultural economy, and shows a regionally significant end-chimney variation of the Cape Cod house form. It was the second house built by early settler William McKinstry.","narrative":"This farmhouse at 361 Pleasant Street in Southbridge dates to about 1780 and is a one-and-a-half story, five-bay clapboard building with double chimneys. It stands on about three acres in a rural setting, with a barn at the rear and open fields across the street. Mid to late 19th-century alterations raised the roof and added a side extension, but the house keeps some 12/12 sash, transoms over the front and side entrances, and a six-paneled front door. Few houses from before 1816 survive in Southbridge without being turned into an ell of a larger farmhouse, and this is one of them. It was the second house built by William McKinstry, who arrived in the area, then part of Sturbridge, around 1748. His son William was born here in 1791, and descendants of the family settled much of this part of town during the 19th century. The house recalls the pre-industrial agricultural era and has remained in family occupancy.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival (New England Vernacular)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent; in use as a residence, still occupied by McKinstry descendants.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.966996-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/54/7931/63793154/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000571.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000571/7461a8da8f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000571/7461a8da8f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SouthbridgeMA_WilliamMcKinstryFarmhouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SouthbridgeMA_WilliamMcKinstryFarmhouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793154","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_McKinstry_Farmhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8015472"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/mckinstry-william-farmhouse-89000571/"}
