It is also tied to the town's mid-19th century real estate development near the Hamilton Woolen Company. It meets criteria A and C at the local level.","narrative":"Set back from Main Street on a hilltop lawn with large old trees, this two-story, three-bay house in Southbridge is regarded as the town's best preserved Italianate residence. Built between about 1855 and 1870, it has a boxy main block, overhanging bracketed eaves, corner quoins, projecting window caps and a substantial entry porch with an arch motif. A period barn is attached, and the clapboard-clad house has been only lightly altered. The site first held an earlier dwelling belonging to Oliver Plimpton, shown on an 1855 map. The present T-plan house appeared on the 1870 county atlas as the property of Capt. John Chamberlain, an insurance agent. By 1898 it belonged to Gilbert Bourdeau, a box maker, who lived there until about 1920. Its construction coincided with a burst of housing near the Hamilton Woolen Company, including the neighboring mill agent's house and factory housing on nearby streets, which ties it to the town's mid-19th century growth.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Residential use; condition described as excellent, with no major alterations noted.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.701201-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/19/7935/63793519/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000569.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000569/d01502e11e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000569/d01502e11e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SouthbridgeMA_ChamberlainBordeauHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SouthbridgeMA_ChamberlainBordeauHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793519","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chamberlain-Bordeau_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5069568"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/chamberlain-bordeau-house-89000569/"}
