It still serves as a residence.","why_significant":"The nomination ties the house to the town's mid-19th century suburban real estate development west of the town center. It also treats the house as an adaptation of the Italianate style to the familiar gable-front form. It is the only unaltered one of four important houses built at Marcy and Edwards Streets between 1855 and 1878.","narrative":"Built between about 1870 and 1878 at 52 Marcy Street in Southbridge, this clapboard house combines Greek Revival and Italianate features. Greek Revival details include paneled corner pilasters, sidelights and a transom at the front door, and a plain entablature on the sides. Italianate features include paired eave brackets, wide eaves, and a pitched roof. Later changes, such as a Stick Style porch, side porches and a second-story bay window, are judged not to detract from its period appearance. The house was one of four important residences at the corner of Marcy and Edwards Streets, part of a suburban estate district that developed west of the town center after Hamilton Street opened in 1850. Edwin B. Cummings, a partner in a Main Street hardware store, lived here. Because the other three houses have been covered with synthetic siding, this is the only unaltered one. Together with the nearby A. Kinney House, it recalls a neighborhood of handsome homes belonging to local businessmen and manufacturers.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate/Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; condition is described as good.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:12:59.884213-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/23/7935/63793523/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000566.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000566/fe5bbc4575-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000566/fe5bbc4575-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:52_Marcy_Street,_Southbridge_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:52_Marcy_Street,_Southbridge_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793523","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E._B._Cummings_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5321728"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/cummings-e-b-house-89000566/"}
