Alden, Jr. The architect is unknown, and a Stick Style carriage house stands on the lot.","why_significant":"The house is significant for its association with the town's late-19th-century real estate development and for adapting the familiar gable-front form to the Queen Anne style. It was part of the earliest development of this section of Hamilton Street. It meets criteria A and C at the local level.","narrative":"Built between about 1882 and 1887 at 428 Hamilton Street in Southbridge, this clapboard and shingle house combines Victorian and Queen Anne features. It was the home of William E. Alden, Jr., who ran a grocery and dry goods business with his father in the Alden Block, the only brick commercial block in Globe Village. The house has a broad sweeping roof, ornamental panels, some shingle siding, turned porch posts and balusters, an asymmetrical design and a complex roofline. It is more elaborate than the typical middle-class Victorian house of its time but less grand than houses such as the A.M. Cheney House. A board and batten carriage house with a cupola and a facade balcony adds to the setting. In 1878 only the church next door and one small house stood nearby, so the house belongs to the earliest development of this part of Hamilton Street. It remains in residential use and is in excellent condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Victorian/Queen Anne","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; condition is described as excellent, with no major alterations and the building not moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.968196-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/93/7935/63793593/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000562.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000562/6aafee5c35-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000562/6aafee5c35-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_E._Alden_House,_Southbridge_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_E._Alden_House,_Southbridge_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793593","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_E._Alden_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8008186"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/alden-william-e-house-89000562/"}
