It was moved to its present site in 1872 and now serves as a parish school.","why_significant":"The building is tied to the town's industrial expansion at Globe Village and to the growth of the immigrant Irish community. It is also valued as an example of the variety of public buildings in the community. It was the first structure built by a Roman Catholic congregation in Southbridge and has been in continuous use by the same parish for over 130 years.","narrative":"Built in 1853 as St. Peter's Church, this building at Hamilton and Pine Streets was the first constructed by a Roman Catholic congregation in Southbridge. Its form resembles a Federal period New England meeting house, with a rectangular hall and a projecting facade tower, while details such as a matchboard pediment, paneled cornerboards and a classical frieze and cornice reflect the Greek Revival style. The parish grew with the Hamilton Woolen Mill, which drew Irish and French Canadian workers, and the mill's managers encouraged a church. In 1872 the congregation built a new Gothic Revival church on the original site and moved the old one to its present location, where it became a parish school. Alterations in 1939 enlarged the side windows, added a new doorframe and stucco finish, and replaced the original belfry with a faceted cupola. Despite these changes, much of its Greek Revival character remains, and it still serves as a school.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Leonard Cutler (builder)","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition listed as good; currently in use as a parish school.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.512532-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/93/7934/63793493/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000559.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000559/fcbdfb84b4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000559/fcbdfb84b4-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown authorUnknown author","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SouthbridgeMA_StMarysSchool.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown authorUnknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SouthbridgeMA_StMarysSchool.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793493","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Peter%27s_Roman_Catholic_Church-St._Mary%27s_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7591420"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/st-peters-roman-catholic-church-st-marys-school-89000559/"}
