The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The house is tied to the development of Southbridge's Center Village and to the town's cutlery industry. It is also a high-quality example of the gable-front, three-bay, side-entry Greek Revival form that was popular in New England between 1830 and about 1855. It is significant at the local level.","narrative":"Built around 1850 at 77 Hamilton Street in Southbridge, this two-and-a-half-story house is a well-preserved example of the Greek Revival style. It has a three-bay, side-entry plan with a gable-front pediment, a form that dominated New England house building from about 1830 to 1855. Details include a heavy pediment with internal frieze, paneled pilasters with capitals, and a doorframe with three-quarter sidelights, a transom and an original two-panel door. Siding has been applied, but the main architectural qualities remain. The house was among the first built on Hamilton Street when it opened in 1850, near Center Village, where town leaders and businessmen built suburban estates. Its first owner, Theodore Harrington, was a member of the Harrington Cutlery Company, the oldest cutlery maker in Southbridge, founded by his father in 1818. The house is now multi-family housing and is in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition is described as good; present use is multi-family residential. Hipped dormers were probably added in the early 20th century, and the exterior is covered in asbestos or synthetic siding.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.848639-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/91/7934/63793491/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000557.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000557/b4a465ba38-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000557/b4a465ba38-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SouthbridgeMA_TheodoreHarringtonHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SouthbridgeMA_TheodoreHarringtonHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793491","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_Harrington_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7781815"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/harrington-theodore-house-89000557/"}
