It is one of the few surviving mid-century middle and working class dwellings north of Main Street, and it survived both the 1863 fire and early-20th-century commercial expansion. It is also associated with the growth of the village.","narrative":"Built around 1850 at 42 Hamilton Street in Southbridge's Centre Village, this one-and-a-half-story Greek Revival cottage follows the three-bay, side-entry, gable-front plan that was the most common middle-class house form in the town through the mid and late 19th century. Rather than a full pediment, it uses gable returns to suggest one. Broad, classical trim survives, including the original cornice, fileted frieze, paneled corner pilasters, and an entrance with three-quarter sidelights, a transom and a six-panel door. A Queen Anne porch was added in the late 19th century. The house is one of few dwellings on Hamilton Street to outlast early-20th-century commercial growth, and it came through the 1863 fire that destroyed much of the area. In the 1870s it belonged to George F. Wall, a merchant tailor, and later to John T. Halpin, a provisions dealer. It is now used for both commercial and residential purposes.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition described as good; present use is commercial/residential, originally residential.
