Architect unknown.","why_significant":"It is argued to be rare surviving housing from Southbridge's early mill development, apparently one of a row built for operatives of Larkin Ammidown's cotton mill. It is probably the only remnant of that early industrial site. It is also an early example of factory housing in the town, with Federal-period cornice and window trim.","narrative":"Ashland Mill Tenement, at 141-143-145 Ashland Avenue in Southbridge, is a modest clapboard workers' house on a granite foundation, dated to 1855 from maps and atlases. It stands in Sandersdale, a secondary industrial area where Lebanon Brook meets the Quinebaug River. The building is plain, though its cornice and window trim are typical of the Federal period, and its raised dormers, which give a full second floor of living space, appear original. It seems to have been one of a row of tenements built for workers at Larkin Ammidown's cotton mill, which began operating in 1834 and burned in 1849. It is believed to be the only surviving trace of that early industrial effort, and it probably also housed workers of Sanders Print Works after 1874. Brick Square is the only other intact early group of factory houses known in Southbridge, and it is far more architecturally ambitious. The tenement was listed for its rarity as early factory housing and remains in residential use in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Utilitarian (astylistic, with Federal-period trim)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential, the same as the original use; condition is described as good.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.845783-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/77/7935/63793577/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000545.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000545/3703d0787c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000545/3703d0787c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SouthbridgeMA_AshlandMillTenement.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SouthbridgeMA_AshlandMillTenement.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793577","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashland_Mill_Tenement","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4805259"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/ashland-mill-tenement-89000545/"}
