It stands on a rise overlooking the Hamilton Woolen Mill in the Globe Village area.","why_significant":"The house is presented as rare surviving housing from Southbridge's early mill development at Globe Village. It is tied to millwright John Edwards Bacon and later to mill agent Joshua Ballard. Its design closely resembles the Judson-Litchfield House, and it keeps much of its original setting.","narrative":"Built about 1840 at 757-761 Main Street in Southbridge, this brick house served the Hamilton Woolen Mill in Globe Village. It was probably erected by the mill company for John Edwards Bacon, the millwright who helped plan and build the 1836 \"Big Mill\" below it. Others connected with the company's store and counting room are recorded as living in the household. By 1855 mill agent Joshua Ballard lived there; he later became treasurer and is credited with guiding the company through its most prosperous years. The house has a gable-front form, brick walls, granite sills and lintels, a recessed side-hall entrance with a fanlight in the pediment, and multi-light sidelights and transoms. A side ell has a porch with a Greek Revival entablature and square Doric posts. A Greek Revival carriage house survives at the rear. It is considered a rare surviving example of early mill housing and is still residential today, in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; probably built by the Hamilton Woolen Mill for millwright John Edwards Bacon","architectural_style":"Federal/Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residence; condition described as good.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:12:59.914034-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/69/7934/63793469/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000543.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000543/ef18ba9016-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000543/ef18ba9016-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:757_Main_Street,_Southbridge_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:757_Main_Street,_Southbridge_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793469","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamilton_Millwright%E2%80%93Agent%27s_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5645061"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/hamilton-millwright-agents-house-89000543/"}
