It is the second in a row of four worker tenements.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is rare surviving housing from Southbridge's early mill development at Globe Village. It is the best preserved of the four company tenements and shows a high degree of architectural pretension for worker housing. It also reflects the company's building expansion following its 1844 start of deslaines manufacture.","narrative":"This frame tenement house at 45 West Street in Southbridge was built by the Hamilton Woolen Mill for its workers, sometime between about 1831 and 1855. It is the second in a row of four tenements and the best preserved of them. Three apparently identical buildings already appeared on the 1855 town map, and a fourth was added to the west between 1870 and 1879. The Greek Revival design has four bays across the front, with entrances on the front and sides, heavy paneled corner pilasters and a wide entablature. These details resemble those of a substantial farmhouse and of middle and upper income houses of the period, giving worker housing a notably imposing look. Later company housing on Mill Street was plainer. The tenements date from a period of heavy construction by the company, which expanded after it began making deslaines in 1844. The building is still residential, though its condition is rated poor. It was listed for its association with early mill development at Globe Village and for its architecture.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; built by the Hamilton Woolen Mill (Hamilton Woolen Company)","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential, as originally; condition is listed as poor, with no major alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:02.286275-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/85/7934/63793485/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000541.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000541/1dbe5c6753-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000541/1dbe5c6753-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:45_West_Street,_Southbridge_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:45_West_Street,_Southbridge_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793485","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamilton_Mill-West_Street_Factory_Housing","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5645059"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/hamilton-mill-west-street-factory-housing-89000541/"}
