The architect is unknown, and it is still used as a residence.","why_significant":"The house is an early, well-preserved example of the gable-front, side-entry house type, with Federal details and Greek Revival ornament. It is also tied to Southbridge's mill economy through Samuel Judson, a Westville cotton mill owner, and later Libya Litchfield of the Litchfield shuttle factory. Its use of brick is notable in the town.","narrative":"Built of brick between about 1830 and 1837, this house at 313 South Street in Southbridge is an early example of the gable-front, side-entry form that later became the most common residential type in Massachusetts. It looks much like a Greek Revival house, but it keeps Federal features: a low arched blinded fanlight in the pediment, a recessed arched entrance, three-quarter length sidelights, a six-panel door and delicate cornice proportions. Samuel Judson, an owner of the Westville cotton mill, is credited with building it, reportedly to rival two imposing brick houses in the town center. It was built on the site of Capt. Samuel Newell's house. By 1870 it was the home of Libya Litchfield, an owner and treasurer of the Litchfield shuttle factory, a leading local industry into the early twentieth century. The factories of both men are gone, so the house is a surviving link to the area's industrial growth. A side porch was added around 1875.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; built by Samuel Judson","architectural_style":"Federal/Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use residential; condition listed as excellent.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.729974-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/67/7934/63793467/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000539.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000539/b6c039b361-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000539/b6c039b361-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SouthbridgeMA_JudsonLitchfieldHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SouthbridgeMA_JudsonLitchfieldHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793467","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judson%E2%80%93Litchfield_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6304204"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/judson-litchfield-house-89000539/"}
