It is a residence on a lot of less than one acre, and the architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The house is tied to the growth of Southbridge's Globe Village and the nearby High-Sayles Street residential district, where many Greek Revival houses were built in the 1840s and 1850s. It is also a well-detailed example of the gable-front, side-entry Greek Revival form common in Southbridge and across Worcester County.","narrative":"Built around 1845 at 230 South Street, this two-and-a-half-story Greek Revival house sits on the outskirts of Southbridge's Globe Village. It has a side entry, a gable front and a three-bay facade under a full pediment. Typical period details include a deep matchboarded pediment, a wide frieze with architrave, paneled corner pilasters and a doorframe with architrave and cornice. Additions were made between 1855 and 1870 and again between 1870 and 1878, including an ell and rear sections. South Street in this area grew in the early to mid 19th century, first as a neighborhood of established families and later of industrialists and merchants. The house seems to have been built as the nearby High-Sayles Street district expanded. Its original owner appears to be the H. Morse shown on an 1855 map. Lyman Morse, listed as a farmer, lived there in the 1870s. The house is still a residence in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; condition is described as good.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.696961-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/83/7934/63793483/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000538.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000538/5ea8b3b6c7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000538/5ea8b3b6c7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:H._Morse_House,_Southbridge_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:H._Morse_House,_Southbridge_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793483","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._Morse_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5628431"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/morse-h-house-89000538/"}
