It combines settlement-period features such as the gambrel roof and heavy timber frame with Georgian symmetry and restrained Federal details. It is the only known surviving example of its type in New Castle and one of only a handful in southeastern New York.","narrative":"Standing at the corner of Grace Lane and Pinesbridge Road in New Castle, this circa 1780 farmhouse is a one-and-one-half story, five-bay timber-frame dwelling under a gambrel roof, set on a fieldstone foundation. Inside, it keeps its center hall plan, exposed heavy timber framing, wide floor boards and original fireplaces, including rare diagonally placed chimneys. Lunette attic windows were added around 1820. Arthur Williams, who likely built the house, was succeeded by descendants of the Williams and DuBois families, who farmed the land for about 150 years until the property was sold and subdivided in 1926. Only three acres remain with the house. It was listed for its architecture. It represents a Hudson Valley building type that blended Dutch-era traditions, Georgian symmetry and Federal details, and it is the only known surviving example in New Castle with a gambrel roof.","period_of_significance":"Circa 1780-1820","architect_builder":"Arthur Williams","architectural_style":"Colonial (regional vernacular farmhouse with Federal period details)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a single-family dwelling; the form says the house retains a high degree of integrity, with no major additions.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.710747-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/89000463.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000463/0f045f1950-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000463/0f045f1950-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Williams%E2%80%93Dubois_House,_New_Castle,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Williams%E2%80%93Dubois_House,_New_Castle,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75323306","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Williams%E2%80%93DuBois_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8021328"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/williams-dubois-house-89000463/"}
