Founded around 1894, it contains brick and metal-clad buildings dating from 1894 to 1965.","why_significant":"The mill represents an important stage in the growth of the textile industry in mid-sized North Carolina piedmont cities between 1890 and 1920, as mills moved to urban, rail-served locations. It is also a well-preserved example of the textile mill complex as an architectural type. Its ca. 1910 Classical Revival office building makes it the most architecturally significant surviving textile mill complex in Raleigh.","narrative":"Pilot Mill is a textile manufacturing complex on a 5.7-acre triangular site just northeast of downtown Raleigh, bounded by railroad tracks and by Haynes and Cedar Streets. James and William H. Williamson bought the site in 1894 and began making unfinished gray cotton cloth. Eight of its thirteen buildings contribute to the complex, including two-story brick mill buildings with timber-framed roofs, chamfered columns and cast-iron bracing caps, a brick smokestack, and a ca. 1910 Classical Revival office building with brick quoins, a pedimented porch and faux battlements. The mill reflects the move of Southern textile production into cities served by railroads and purchased power. At its peak it was one of only two Raleigh mills making unfinished sheet goods. It is one of only three textile mills known to survive in the city. Ownership changed several times before the mill closed in 1982.","period_of_significance":"1894-1939","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Vernacular Industrial; Classical Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The mill operated until it closed in 1982. Current functions are listed as work in progress and commerce/trade warehouse. Some buildings show water damage and deterioration.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:51.28099-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/73/7226/47722673/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/89000441.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722673","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilot_Mill","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q22061045"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/wake-county/pilot-mill-89000441/"}
