The meeting house was built about 1790.","why_significant":"It is an intact example of a traditional ungalleried Quaker meeting house, recalling the early growth of the Society of Friends in Dutchess County. It is one of three surviving single-story examples in the county, with a movable central partition, a raised facing-bench platform and plain furnishings that express Quaker plainness. The cemetery and privy show continued Quaker use of the site.","narrative":"Built about 1790 at the corner of Oswego and Smith Roads in Unionvale, this one and one-half story frame meeting house served the Oswego Quaker community, which once included about a dozen houses, several stores, a district school and a Friends' boarding school. It was the third meeting house for the group, which first gathered around 1750. The plain, gable-roofed building has double entrances on the south facade, and its interior keeps a movable paneled partition, a raised platform with facing benches and a folding clerk's table. A porch was added in the 1870s, and the east room was later adapted for Sunday school use. Below it on the hillside lies a cemetery of about fifty small, unembellished marble markers, some unmarked, dating from the 1790s to the 1880s, plus a wood-frame privy with three seats. It is one of three surviving single-story meeting houses in the county and was kept by the Hicksite branch after the 1828 separation.","period_of_significance":"c. 1790 - c. 1890","architect_builder":"Architect: function carried out by committee appointed by meeting; builder unknown","architectural_style":"Traditional ungalleried Quaker meeting house","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is described as good.
